Having already enjoyed his newspaper and magazine columns as a reader, it
was a genuine pleasure to actually work and write
alongside Joe Doggett for 23 years. During that
time, we became close friends and shared adventures
in some of the finest outdoor destinations on and
off the continent. His abilities in the field were
superior to those of most hunting and fishing
journalists we met, and that proficiency enabled Joe
to report as a confident participant rather than
simple observer. As a writer, one of the qualities I most admire about Joe is his ability to recreate sights and sounds and smells and textures, to drop us into places we've never been, with only words. At our desks, we routinely exchanged ideas and challenged each other creatively, and I always emerged from those sessions a better writer. The columns he selected for inclusions in this book tell a variety of individual stories and, as a whole., tell Joe's story. He is proud of them, and rightfully so. Each contains pieces of his genuine passion for wildlife and of his brilliantly creative mind. |
